ds-DNA (Double Stranded) – Antibody by ELISA, Serum
Test Name: ds-DNA (Double Stranded) Antibody by ELISA, Serum
Sample Type: Serum
Method: Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
About the Test
The ds-DNA antibody test detects antibodies directed against double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) in the blood. These are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that can be associated with autoimmune disorders.
Clinical Significance
Anti-dsDNA antibodies are particularly associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The test can support:
- Evaluation of suspected SLE
- Supporting an established diagnosis of SLE
- Assessment of disease activity in appropriate clinical settings
- Monitoring patients when interpreted along with other clinical and laboratory findings
When Is the Test Recommended?
A doctor may recommend this test when symptoms or other laboratory findings suggest an autoimmune connective-tissue disorder, such as:
- Unexplained joint pain or swelling
- Persistent fatigue
- Skin rashes or photosensitivity
- Unexplained fever
- Abnormal ANA results
- Other features suggestive of SLE
Result Interpretation
Positive: May support the diagnosis of SLE, particularly when clinical findings and other investigations are consistent. Higher levels may sometimes correlate with disease activity, especially renal involvement.
Negative: Makes SLE less likely but does not completely exclude it, as anti-dsDNA antibodies may not be present in every patient.
Important: Results should be interpreted together with ANA, complement levels, urinalysis, kidney function tests, and clinical findings. A positive result alone does not establish a diagnosis.
Patient Preparation
Usually no special preparation or fasting is required. A serum blood sample is collected.
Disclaimer: This test is intended for clinical evaluation and should be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional in conjunction with the patient's symptoms and other investigations.
