About the Test

The Serum Digoxin test measures the concentration of digoxin in the blood. Digoxin is a cardiac medication used primarily in certain patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Measuring its blood level helps assess whether the drug concentration is within the therapeutic range and helps reduce the risk of toxicity.

Why is the Test Done?

• To monitor digoxin therapy
• To assess suspected digoxin toxicity
• To investigate symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or visual disturbances

Patient Preparation

Usually, no special preparation is required. The sample should generally be collected at least 6–8 hours after the last dose (often at the trough level), as advised by the treating physician.

Clinical Significance

Increased levels may indicate an increased risk of digoxin toxicity.
Low levels may suggest inadequate drug exposure, depending on the clinical situation.
