Overview
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that enable communication between nerve cells and regulate movement, cognition, mood, autonomic functions, and many other neurological processes. Genetic defects affecting neurotransmitter synthesis, metabolism, transport, or degradation can lead to rare but potentially treatable neurological disorders.
What Does This Gene Panel Detect?
The Disorders of Neurotransmitter Metabolism Gene Panel evaluates genes associated with inherited abnormalities involving:
- Dopamine and serotonin metabolism
- GABA and glutamate pathways
- Glycine and other inhibitory neurotransmitters
- Neurotransmitter synthesis and degradation
- Cofactor and vitamin-dependent neurotransmitter pathways
- Neurotransmitter transport and vesicular release
