What is DHEA?
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands. It acts as a precursor for the production of testosterone and estrogen.
Why is the test performed?
Serum DHEA testing may help evaluate:
Adrenal gland function
Excess androgen production
Hirsutism or excessive hair growth
Acne or other signs of androgen excess
Early or abnormal puberty
Virilization
Suspected adrenal disorders
Adrenal tumors or hyperplasia
Evaluation of androgen-related hormonal abnormalities
Clinical Significance
High DHEA levels may be associated with increased adrenal androgen production, adrenal hyperplasia, certain adrenal tumors, or some endocrine disorders.
Low DHEA levels may occur with adrenal insufficiency, impaired adrenal function, or age-related reduction in DHEA production.
Patient Preparation
Usually, no special preparation is required. However, DHEA levels can vary with age, sex, time of day, and certain medications. Interpretation should be done along with clinical findings and other hormone tests when appropriate.
Important Note
DHEA is different from DHEA-S (Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate). DHEA-S is generally more stable in circulation and is often preferred when assessing adrenal androgen production. Reference ranges are laboratory-, age-, and sex-specific.
