Test Overview: Dengue PCR is a molecular diagnostic test used to detect the genetic material (RNA) of the Dengue virus in a plasma sample. It is particularly useful during the early phase of dengue infection, when viral RNA may be detectable before antibodies become positive.
Suspected dengue infection during the early febrile phase
Fever with symptoms suggestive of dengue
Early laboratory confirmation when serological tests may still be negative
Differentiation of dengue infection from other causes of acute febrile illness
What the Test Detects: The test detects Dengue virus RNA and reports the result qualitatively as:
Detected / Positive: Dengue viral RNA detected
Not Detected / Negative: Dengue viral RNA not detected in the tested specimen
When Is It Useful? Dengue PCR is generally most useful during the early stage of infection, when the virus is actively circulating in the blood.
Sample Requirements:
Plasma collected in an appropriate anticoagulant tube as per laboratory protocol
Proper sample handling and timely transportation are important for reliable results
Interpretation: A positive result supports the presence of an active dengue virus infection. A negative result does not completely exclude dengue, particularly if the sample is collected outside the optimal detection window or viral RNA levels are low.
Important Note: Results should always be interpreted along with clinical symptoms, duration of fever, platelet count and other dengue investigations such as NS1 antigen and dengue IgM/IgG, as advised by the treating physician.
