D-Dimer is a blood test that measures a protein fragment produced when a blood clot is broken down in the body. It is commonly used as an aid in assessing active clot formation and breakdown.
Clinical Uses
Helps evaluate suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Helps assess suspected pulmonary embolism (PE)
Supports evaluation of abnormal blood clotting
May be used as part of the assessment for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
Helps rule out significant thromboembolism in appropriate patients when interpreted with clinical assessment

Patient Preparation
No special fasting is generally required. Inform the healthcare provider about medications and any ongoing medical conditions.
Interpretation
D-Dimer results should not be interpreted in isolation. Elevated levels can occur with thrombosis but may also be seen with infection, inflammation, pregnancy, recent surgery or trauma, liver disease, malignancy, and increasing age.
