Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Quantitative (Viral Load) by Real-Time PCR
Test Overview
Quantitative CMV PCR measures the amount of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA present in a clinical specimen. It provides a viral load value, helping assess active CMV replication and monitor response to antiviral treatment.
Why is this test done?
- Detect and quantify active CMV infection

Test Result
Reported as CMV DNA viral load, commonly in IU/mL and/or log₁₀ IU/mL.
Clinical Significance
A detectable CMV viral load indicates the presence of CMV DNA in the tested specimen. Changes in viral load over time can be useful for monitoring disease activity and treatment response. Results should always be interpreted along with clinical findings and the patient's immune status.
Important Note
A positive CMV PCR does not by itself confirm CMV disease. Viral-load thresholds for treatment or clinical intervention may vary depending on the patient population, specimen type, transplant protocol, and laboratory method.
