Evaluation of sputum for abnormal or malignant cells.
Helps detect cytological evidence suggestive of lung carcinoma.
May assist in evaluating respiratory tract inflammatory or infectious conditions.
Test Includes:
Macroscopic assessment of the specimen.
Preparation of cytology smears.
Staining and microscopic examination.
Assessment for atypical, suspicious, or malignant cells.
Reporting of significant inflammatory or cellular findings.
Sample Requirement:
Fresh, deep-cough sputum specimen, preferably collected in the morning.
Avoid saliva or oral secretions as the primary specimen.
Interpretation: Results are reported based on the cytological findings and may be categorized as negative for malignant cells, atypical/suspicious, or positive for malignant cells, where applicable.
Important Note: A negative sputum cytology result does not completely exclude lung malignancy. Further investigations such as imaging or bronchoscopy may be recommended based on clinical findings.
