Test Name: Cytology – Nipple Discharge, Conventional

Specimen: Nipple discharge

Method: Conventional cytological examination

Purpose:
Microscopic evaluation of nipple discharge to identify benign, inflammatory, atypical, or malignant cells and assist in the assessment of breast pathology.

Clinical Indications:

• Bloody or serous nipple discharge
• Persistent or unexplained nipple discharge
• Suspected breast lesion
• Evaluation for atypical or malignant cells
• Follow-up of known breast abnormalities

Sample Collection:
Nipple discharge is collected directly onto clean glass slides or in an appropriate cytology container as per laboratory protocol.

Test Includes:

• Preparation and staining of cytology smears
• Microscopic examination
• Assessment of cellular morphology
• Reporting of benign, inflammatory, atypical, or malignant findings when identified

Report: Cytological findings with an appropriate diagnostic interpretation.

Limitations: A negative cytology result does not completely exclude an underlying breast lesion. Correlation with clinical examination and imaging findings may be recommended.
