Test Name: Cytology – CSF, Conventional

Specimen: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

Method: Conventional cytological examination

Purpose:
Microscopic examination of CSF to evaluate cellular components and detect abnormal or malignant cells.

Clinical Indications:

• Suspected CNS malignancy or leptomeningeal metastasis
• Evaluation of unexplained neurological symptoms
• Suspected lymphoma/leukemia involving the CNS
• Detection of atypical or malignant cells in CSF
• Monitoring known CNS malignancy

Test Includes:

• Preparation of cytology smears from CSF
• Cellular morphology assessment
• Evaluation for atypical, suspicious, or malignant cells
• Cytological interpretation and reporting

Sample Requirement: Fresh CSF collected in a sterile, appropriately labeled container; prompt transportation to the laboratory is recommended.

Result Interpretation: Results are reported based on the cytological findings, including presence/absence and description of abnormal or malignant cells.

Limitations: A negative cytology result does not completely exclude CNS malignancy, particularly when the cellular yield is low. Clinical correlation and repeat CSF examination may be advised when clinically indicated.
