Cytology by LBC, Urine
Test Name: Cytology by Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC), Urine
Specimen: Urine
Department: Cytopathology
Method: Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC)
Purpose:
Urine cytology by LBC examines urinary tract cells for abnormal or malignant changes. It is particularly useful in the evaluation of suspected urothelial carcinoma and other urinary tract abnormalities.
Clinical Indications:
- Evaluation of suspected bladder or urinary tract malignancy
- Hematuria (blood in urine)
- Follow-up of patients with a history of urothelial carcinoma
- Detection of high-grade urothelial abnormalities
- Investigation of unexplained urinary symptoms
Sample Requirements:
- Freshly collected urine sample, preferably as instructed by the laboratory
- Adequate volume is required for processing
- Avoid contamination with preservatives or other fluids unless specifically instructed
Test Includes:
- Processing of urine using liquid-based cytology
- Preparation of a cytology slide
- Microscopic examination of urinary cells
- Assessment for atypical, suspicious, or malignant cells
Reporting:
The report describes the cellular findings and may categorize them as negative for malignancy, atypical, suspicious, or malignant, according to the cytology findings and laboratory reporting system.
Limitations:
Urine cytology is more sensitive for high-grade urothelial lesions than for low-grade lesions. A negative result does not completely exclude malignancy and should be interpreted along with clinical findings, imaging, cystoscopy, and other investigations when indicated.
