About the Test

Cyfra 21-1 measures Cytokeratin 19 Fragment, a protein fragment released into the bloodstream from epithelial cells. It is primarily used as a tumor marker, particularly in the evaluation and monitoring of certain lung cancers.

Clinical Uses

• Supports evaluation of suspected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
• May be particularly useful in squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.
• Helps monitor response to treatment in selected patients.
• May assist in detecting disease progression or recurrence when interpreted with clinical findings and imaging.
• Can be used as part of the overall assessment of certain other epithelial malignancies.

Interpretation

Important Note

Cyfra 21-1 is not recommended as a stand-alone screening test for cancer in asymptomatic individuals. It is primarily useful for specific clinical indications and disease monitoring.
