Test Name: Cyfra 21-1 Sample Type: Serum Test Category: Tumor Marker / Oncology
About the Test
Cyfra 21-1 measures Cytokeratin 19 Fragment, a protein fragment released into the bloodstream from epithelial cells. It is primarily used as a tumor marker, particularly in the evaluation and monitoring of certain lung cancers.
Clinical Uses
Supports evaluation of suspected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
May be particularly useful in squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.
Helps monitor response to treatment in selected patients.
May assist in detecting disease progression or recurrence when interpreted with clinical findings and imaging.
Can be used as part of the overall assessment of certain other epithelial malignancies.
Sample Requirement
Specimen: Serum
Preparation: Usually no special preparation is required unless otherwise instructed.
Follow the laboratory's collection instructions for accurate testing.
Interpretation
An elevated Cyfra 21-1 level does not by itself diagnose cancer. Results should be interpreted along with symptoms, imaging studies, clinical examination, and other laboratory findings. Elevated levels can occasionally occur in certain non-malignant conditions.
Important Note
Cyfra 21-1 is not recommended as a stand-alone screening test for cancer in asymptomatic individuals. It is primarily useful for specific clinical indications and disease monitoring.
