What is the test?
This test is performed to detect and identify anaerobic bacteria in a blood sample. Anaerobic bacteria grow in environments with little or no oxygen and may cause serious bloodstream infections.
Why is it performed?
- Suspected anaerobic bloodstream infection
- Fever or chills with suspected bacteremia/sepsis
- Suspected infection from abdominal, pelvic, deep tissue, or other anaerobic sources
- To identify the causative organism and guide appropriate treatment
Sample Required:
Blood collected using appropriate sterile blood-culture collection procedures and transported promptly to the laboratory.
Method:
Conventional anaerobic culture followed by microbiological identification using appropriate laboratory techniques.
What does the report indicate?

No growth: No anaerobic bacteria detected under the test conditions.

Growth: An anaerobic bacterial organism has been isolated and identified.
