Test Overview Culture & Sensitivity (C&S) of urethral discharge is a microbiological test used to detect and identify bacteria that may be responsible for urethral infection. The test combines aerobic bacterial culture, automated organism identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using the VITEK automated system.
What does the test detect?
The test can help identify clinically significant aerobic bacteria associated with urethral infections, such as:
Staphylococcus species
Streptococcus species
Enterococcus species
Enterobacterales
Other aerobic bacteria, when clinically relevant
How is the test performed?
Sample collection: Urethral discharge is collected using an appropriate sterile swab.
Aerobic culture: The specimen is cultured under suitable conditions to detect bacterial growth.
Automated identification: Isolated bacteria are identified using the VITEK automated identification system.
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing: The VITEK system evaluates the organism's response to selected antibiotics.
Reporting: The laboratory reports the identified organism and its susceptibility pattern to guide appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Important Note
