Test Overview
Culture & Sensitivity (C&S), Aerobic, Tissue is a microbiological test used to detect and identify aerobic bacteria present in a tissue specimen and determine which antibiotics are likely to be effective against the isolated organism.
Methodology

Culture: Tissue specimen is processed and cultured under aerobic conditions to detect bacterial growth.

Identification: The isolated organism is identified using conventional microbiological methods based on colony characteristics and appropriate biochemical testing.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST): Performed using the VITEK automated system to determine the organism's susceptibility or resistance to selected antibiotics.
Why is this test performed?
- Suspected bacterial infection of tissue or wounds
- Post-surgical or traumatic wound infections
- Persistent or non-healing wounds
- Detection of bacteria causing localized or deep-seated infections
- Guiding targeted antibiotic therapy
Sample Required: Tissue specimen collected using appropriate sterile technique.
Result Interpretation
The report may identify the organism(s) isolated and provide an antibiotic susceptibility profile, indicating antibiotics to which the organism is susceptible, intermediate, or resistant, as applicable.
Clinical Importance
Combining conventional organism identification with automated VITEK-based AST helps provide clinically useful information for selecting appropriate antimicrobial treatment and supporting antimicrobial stewardship.
