Test Name: Culture & Sensitivity, Aerobic, Tissue – Automated Identification & Sensitivity on VITEK
What is the test?
This is a microbiology test performed on a tissue specimen to detect bacteria that may be causing an infection. When significant bacterial growth is detected, the organism is identified using an automated VITEK system, followed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine which antibiotics are likely to be effective.
Why is it done?
The test may be recommended for suspected bacterial infections involving:
Surgical or traumatic wounds
Deep soft-tissue infections
Post-operative infections
Abscesses and infected lesions
Other clinically suspected tissue infections
What does the test report?
The report may provide:
Bacterial growth: Detected / No significant growth
Organism identification: Name of the bacteria isolated
Antimicrobial susceptibility: Antibiotics to which the organism is Sensitive, Intermediate, or Resistant
Relevant microbiology comments, where applicable
How is the test performed?
A properly collected tissue specimen is submitted to the laboratory.
The specimen is cultured under appropriate aerobic conditions.
If bacterial growth is significant, the isolate is processed on the VITEK automated system.
VITEK helps with automated bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).
Results are reviewed and reported by the microbiology laboratory.
