What is this test?

This test examines a throat swab sample for the presence of aerobic bacterial pathogens that may cause throat infections. The isolated bacteria are identified using the VITEK automated identification system, followed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine which antibiotics are likely to be effective.

Why is it done?

It may be recommended when a bacterial throat infection is suspected, especially in cases of:

• Persistent or recurrent sore throat
• Fever with throat discomfort
• Tonsillar inflammation or exudate
• Difficulty or pain while swallowing
• Suspected bacterial pharyngitis
• Recurrent throat infections

How does VITEK help?

The VITEK system provides automated bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). It helps determine:

• Which organism is present
• Which antibiotics may be effective
• Whether the organism shows antimicrobial resistance
