Test Overview This test is used to detect and identify aerobic bacterial pathogens in stool samples and determine their susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics. Bacterial identification is performed using conventional microbiological methods, followed by automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) on VITEK.
Antibiotics to which the organism is Sensitive, Intermediate, or Resistant
Why Is This Test Done? It may be recommended when bacterial gastroenteritis is suspected, particularly in cases of:
Persistent or severe diarrhea
Blood or mucus in stools
Fever associated with gastrointestinal symptoms
Suspected bacterial food poisoning
Recurrent or unexplained intestinal infection
Sample Required: Stool Method: Conventional bacterial identification + Automated AST on VITEK Result: Organism identification with antibiotic susceptibility profile
Clinical Significance The antibiotic susceptibility results can help the treating physician select an appropriate antibiotic when treatment is indicated, while helping avoid ineffective antibiotic therapy.
Important: Antibiotics should be taken only as prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional. A negative culture does not necessarily exclude every possible cause of diarrhea, as some infections are viral, parasitic, or caused by organisms not detected by routine culture.
