Conventional Identification & Automated AST on VITEK
Test Overview
This test is performed to detect and identify aerobic bacteria present in semen samples and determine their susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics. Conventional microbiological methods are used for organism identification, followed by automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) on the VITEK system.
What Does the Test Detect?
Aerobic bacterial growth in semen
Identification of clinically significant bacterial organisms
Antibiotic susceptibility/resistance patterns
Helps guide appropriate antimicrobial therapy
Why Is This Test Done?
Semen culture may be recommended when bacterial infection of the male reproductive tract is suspected, particularly in cases of:
Symptoms suggestive of genital or urinary infection
Recurrent infections
Abnormal semen findings associated with suspected infection
Infertility evaluation when infection is clinically suspected
Monitoring response to treatment when indicated
How Does It Work?
Sample Collection: Semen is collected in a sterile container according to laboratory instructions.
Culture: The sample is cultured under appropriate aerobic conditions.
Identification: Bacterial growth is identified using conventional microbiological methods.
Automated AST: The identified organism is tested against antibiotics using the VITEK automated system.
Reporting: The report provides the organism identified and its antibiotic susceptibility pattern.
Important: A positive culture does not by itself establish infection; results should be interpreted along with symptoms, clinical findings, and other laboratory investigations by the treating clinician.
