Test Overview:
Culture & Sensitivity (C&S) of respiratory samples is performed to detect and identify aerobic bacterial pathogens that may be associated with respiratory tract infections. Following growth of significant organisms, automated identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using VITEK helps determine the organism and its susceptibility pattern.

Sample Types:

• Sputum
• Endotracheal aspirate
• Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)
• Tracheal aspirate
• Other clinically relevant respiratory specimens

What the Test Detects:

• Aerobic bacterial pathogens
• Significant bacterial growth
• Antimicrobial susceptibility/resistance patterns

Method:

• Culture-based bacterial isolation
• Automated organism identification using VITEK
• Automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)

Why is it Done?
The test may be recommended when a bacterial respiratory infection is suspected, particularly in cases of persistent or recurrent respiratory symptoms, pneumonia, or infections in hospitalized patients. The susceptibility results can assist clinicians in selecting an appropriate antimicrobial.

Report Includes:

• Organism identification
• Antimicrobial susceptibility profile
• Susceptible/Intermediate/Resistant interpretation, where applicable

Patient Preparation:
Usually, no special preparation is required. The specimen should be collected using proper sterile technique and preferably before starting antibiotics, when clinically appropriate.

Important:
Results should be interpreted along with clinical findings and other laboratory investigations. Detection of bacteria does not always indicate active infection, as some organisms may represent colonization.
