Conventional Identification & Automated AST on VITEK
Test Overview
This test is performed on a pus/wound specimen to detect and identify aerobic bacteria that may be responsible for a bacterial infection. Conventional microbiological methods are used for organism identification, followed by automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using VITEK to determine which antibiotics are likely to be effective.
Why is this test done?
It may be recommended for suspected bacterial infections associated with:
Wounds, abscesses, or infected ulcers
Surgical-site infections
Skin and soft-tissue infections
Persistent or recurrent pus discharge
Infections that are not responding to empirical antibiotics
What does the test include?
Aerobic bacterial culture from the pus specimen
Conventional identification of significant bacterial isolates
Automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) on VITEK
Reporting of the organism identified and its antibiotic susceptibility pattern
Sample Required
Pus / wound specimen, collected using appropriate sterile collection techniques.
Important Note
Whenever possible, the specimen should be collected before starting antibiotics or as advised by the treating physician. Antibiotic use before collection may affect culture results.
Result Interpretation
A positive culture may identify the bacteria causing the infection and provide an antibiotic susceptibility profile. The treating clinician can use these findings to select appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
