🧪 Test Overview
This test is performed on a nasal swab specimen to detect and identify aerobic bacteria that may be associated with nasal colonization or infection. Bacterial isolates are identified using conventional microbiological methods, followed by automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) on VITEK.
🔬 What Does the Test Detect?
Aerobic bacterial growth from the nasal swab
Identification of clinically significant bacterial isolates
Antibiotic susceptibility/resistance pattern of the isolated organism
🧬 Methodology
1. Conventional Identification: Bacterial growth is assessed using culture and conventional microbiological identification techniques.
2. Automated AST on VITEK: The identified bacterial isolate is tested against relevant antimicrobial agents using the VITEK automated system to determine its susceptibility pattern.
👨⚕️ When Is It Recommended?
A healthcare provider may recommend this test when evaluation of bacterial colonization or infection of the nasal passage is clinically indicated, particularly in cases of:
Recurrent nasal or upper respiratory bacterial infections
Suspected bacterial colonization
Persistent nasal symptoms where bacterial infection is considered
Infection-control or screening requirements, when clinically appropriate
