Test Name: Culture & Sensitivity, Aerobic, Miscellaneous – Automated Identification & Sensitivity on VITEK
Purpose: This test detects and identifies aerobic bacterial pathogens present in miscellaneous clinical specimens and determines their antimicrobial susceptibility using the automated VITEK system.
Sample Type: Miscellaneous clinical specimens, as applicable, such as body site swabs, wound-related specimens, tissue, fluids, or other specimens submitted for bacterial culture.
Methodology:
Aerobic bacterial culture
Automated bacterial identification using VITEK
Automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using VITEK
Results interpreted according to applicable laboratory standards
What the Test Detects:
Presence or absence of significant aerobic bacterial growth
Identification of the bacterial organism
Antibiotics to which the organism is Susceptible, Intermediate, or Resistant
Clinical Significance: The test helps clinicians identify the causative bacterial organism and select an appropriate antibiotic, particularly when bacterial infection is suspected and empirical treatment may need to be guided by susceptibility results.

Why Automated VITEK? Automated identification and susceptibility testing can provide standardized, efficient and reproducible laboratory results, supporting targeted antimicrobial therapy.
Patient Preparation: Generally, no special preparation is required. Specimen collection should follow the laboratory's recommended procedure, preferably before starting antibiotics whenever clinically appropriate.
Important: Results should be interpreted along with the patient's clinical findings and specimen source. A positive culture does not always indicate infection, as colonization or contamination may occur depending on the specimen.
Turnaround Time: Typically 24–72 hours, depending on organism growth and susceptibility testing requirements.
