Conventional Identification & Automated AST on VITEK
Test Overview
This test is performed on an ear swab specimen to detect and identify aerobic bacteria that may be associated with ear infections. Conventional microbiological methods are used for bacterial identification, followed by automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using the VITEK system.
What Does the Test Detect?
Aerobic bacterial pathogens from the ear specimen
Identification of the causative microorganism
Antibiotics to which the isolated bacteria are susceptible or resistant
Why Is This Test Done?
It may be recommended when there is:
Ear discharge or pus
Persistent or recurrent ear infection
Suspected bacterial otitis externa or otitis media
The test helps healthcare professionals identify the causative bacteria and select an appropriate antibiotic based on the organism's antimicrobial susceptibility profile, supporting more targeted treatment.
Sample Requirements
Specimen: Ear swab collected from the affected site
Sample collection should preferably be performed before starting antibiotics, when clinically appropriate.
Proper collection and transport are important for reliable culture results.
Report May Include
Organism identified
Growth/no growth status
Antimicrobial susceptibility results
Sensitive (S), Intermediate (I), or Resistant (R) interpretation, where applicable
Important: Antibiotic selection should be based on the laboratory report along with the patient's clinical findings and treating physician's assessment.
