Test Overview This test detects aerobic bacteria that may be causing an ear infection. The isolated organism is identified using an automated VITEK system, followed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine which antibiotics are likely to be effective.
Useful in persistent, recurrent, or treatment-resistant ear infections
Common indications
Ear discharge
Ear pain or discomfort
Recurrent ear infections
Suspected bacterial otitis externa or otitis media
Infection not responding to empirical antibiotics
Test Report
The report may include:
Bacterial growth / no growth
Identified bacterial species
Antibiotic susceptibility profile
Sensitive / Intermediate / Resistant interpretation, as applicable
Patient Preparation: Usually no special preparation is required. Sample collection should ideally be performed before starting antibiotics, when clinically appropriate.
Important: Results should be interpreted along with clinical findings by the treating healthcare professional.
