What is this test?

This test examines cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for the presence of aerobic bacteria that may cause infections of the central nervous system. If bacteria are detected, the organism is identified and its susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics is assessed using the VITEK automated system.

Why is it done?

It may be recommended when bacterial infection of the central nervous system is suspected, including:

• Meningitis
• Other serious CNS infections
• Suspected bacterial infection following neurosurgical procedures or trauma

What does the test provide?

• Bacterial culture: Detects growth of aerobic bacteria.
• Automated identification: Identifies the causative bacterial organism.
• Antimicrobial susceptibility testing: Determines which antibiotics are likely to be effective against the isolated organism.

Sample Required

Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) collected by a qualified healthcare professional under appropriate sterile conditions.
