Conventional Identification & Automated AST on Vitek
🧪 Test Overview
This test is performed on a catheter tip to detect and identify aerobic bacteria that may be associated with catheter-related infections. The isolated organism is identified using conventional microbiological methods, followed by automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) on Vitek.
🔬 What Does the Test Detect?
Aerobic bacterial growth from catheter tips
Identification of clinically significant bacterial isolates
Antibiotic susceptibility/resistance patterns
Antibiotics likely to be effective against the identified organism
🩺 When Is It Recommended?
The test may be advised when a catheter-related infection is suspected, particularly in patients with:
Fever or chills without an obvious source
Local redness, swelling, tenderness, or discharge around the catheter site
Suspected bloodstream infection associated with an indwelling catheter
Persistent infection despite antibiotic treatment

📋 Report Interpretation

⚠️ Important
A positive catheter-tip culture does not by itself establish a bloodstream infection. Results should be interpreted along with the patient's symptoms, blood culture findings, and clinical assessment.
