Purpose: This test detects aerobic bacterial infections in tissue specimens, identifies the causative bacteria, and determines which antibiotics are likely to be effective.
What the Test Detects:
Aerobic bacterial growth from tissue
Bacterial identification using conventional microbiological methods
Antibiotic susceptibility through AST (Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing)
Why is it Done? Recommended when a bacterial infection of tissue is suspected, particularly in cases of:
Infected wounds or ulcers
Post-surgical infections
Abscesses
Deep tissue infections
Persistent or non-healing wounds
Test Method: Conventional bacterial culture, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Result Interpretation: Results may report no significant bacterial growth or identify the organism(s) isolated along with their antibiotic susceptibility pattern. Clinical correlation is recommended.
Sample Requirements: Properly collected tissue specimen, preferably from the infected site and before starting antibiotics when clinically appropriate.
Turnaround Time: Typically 2–5 days, depending on bacterial growth and susceptibility testing requirements.
Important: A negative culture does not always completely exclude infection. Prior antibiotic use, inadequate sampling, or low bacterial load may affect results.
