Conventional Identification & AST
Test Overview:
Stool Culture & Sensitivity is a microbiological test used to detect and identify clinically significant aerobic bacterial pathogens present in a stool sample. The isolated bacteria are identified using conventional laboratory methods and tested for their response to commonly used antibiotics.
Why is this test done?
- Persistent or severe diarrhea
- Suspected bacterial gastroenteritis
- Blood or mucus in stool
- Fever associated with gastrointestinal symptoms
- Suspected food- or water-borne bacterial infection
- To help guide appropriate antibiotic therapy
What does the test detect?
The test may identify clinically relevant bacterial pathogens such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, pathogenic Escherichia coli and other organisms, depending on the clinical situation and laboratory protocol.
AST – Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing:
If a significant bacterial pathogen is isolated, AST determines which antibiotics are likely to be effective against the organism. This helps healthcare professionals select targeted antimicrobial treatment.

Report: Organism identified, if significant growth is detected, with antimicrobial susceptibility results where applicable.
Patient Preparation:
Collect a properly obtained stool specimen in a clean, sterile, leak-proof container and submit it promptly to the laboratory. Follow the laboratory's specific collection instructions.
