Test Overview: The Anti Histone Antibodies, Serum test is used to detect antibodies directed against histone proteins, which are essential components of cell nuclei. The presence of these antibodies is commonly associated with drug-induced lupus erythematosus (DILE) and may also be seen in certain autoimmune disorders.
Why is this Test Done?
Helps diagnose drug-induced lupus caused by medications such as hydralazine, procainamide, isoniazid, and others.
Assists in differentiating drug-induced lupus from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Supports the evaluation of autoimmune conditions presenting with lupus-like symptoms.
Helps monitor patients with suspected medication-related autoimmune reactions.
Symptoms That May Require Testing
Joint pain and swelling
Muscle aches
Persistent fatigue
Skin rashes
Fever of unknown origin
Chest pain associated with inflammation
Sample Required
Sample Type: Serum
Preparation: No special fasting is usually required unless advised by your healthcare provider.
Benefits of the Test
Early detection of drug-induced autoimmune reactions
Aids in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning
Helps distinguish between different types of lupus
Supports better management of autoimmune diseases
Interpretation
Positive Result: May indicate drug-induced lupus or other autoimmune disorders.
Negative Result: Makes the presence of anti-histone antibodies less likely but does not completely exclude autoimmune disease.
Note: Test results should always be interpreted along with clinical findings, medication history, and other laboratory investigations by a qualified healthcare professional.
