Allergen – Pineapple, Serum

Test Purpose:
This test detects specific IgE antibodies against pineapple in serum to evaluate allergic sensitization to pineapple.

Clinical Significance:
Pineapple allergy may cause mild to severe hypersensitivity reactions after ingestion or contact. Symptoms can include:

• Oral itching or burning sensation
• Swelling of lips, tongue, or throat
• Skin rash, hives, or itching
• Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
• Wheezing or breathing difficulty
• Rarely, anaphylactic reactions

The allergenic response is commonly associated with bromelain and profilin proteins present in pineapple.

Indications:
Recommended for patients with suspected fruit allergy, oral allergy syndrome, unexplained allergic reactions after pineapple consumption, or cross-reactivity with pollen-related allergies.

Interpretation:
Higher specific IgE levels suggest sensitization to pineapple allergens. Results should be correlated with clinical history and other allergy evaluations.
