Test Purpose: This test detects specific IgE antibodies against pineapple in serum to evaluate allergic sensitization to pineapple.
Clinical Significance: Pineapple allergy may cause mild to severe hypersensitivity reactions after ingestion or contact. Symptoms can include:
Oral itching or burning sensation
Swelling of lips, tongue, or throat
Skin rash, hives, or itching
Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
Wheezing or breathing difficulty
Rarely, anaphylactic reactions
The allergenic response is commonly associated with bromelain and profilin proteins present in pineapple.
Methodology: Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA)
Sample Type: Serum
Indications: Recommended for patients with suspected fruit allergy, oral allergy syndrome, unexplained allergic reactions after pineapple consumption, or cross-reactivity with pollen-related allergies.
Interpretation: Higher specific IgE levels suggest sensitization to pineapple allergens. Results should be correlated with clinical history and other allergy evaluations.
