Test Name: Aldolase, Serum

Purpose:
The Aldolase test measures the level of the aldolase enzyme in the blood. It is primarily used to help diagnose and monitor muscle disorders, muscle damage, and certain inflammatory muscle diseases. It may also provide supportive information in some liver conditions.

Why is this test done?

• Evaluate unexplained muscle weakness or pain
• Diagnose inflammatory muscle diseases (e.g., polymyositis, dermatomyositis)
• Assess muscular dystrophy and other muscle disorders
• Monitor response to treatment for muscle diseases
• Support evaluation of certain liver conditions

Sample Required:

• Serum (Blood sample)

Preparation:

• Fasting is generally not required unless advised by your doctor.
• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before the test, as it may temporarily increase aldolase levels.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking.

High Aldolase Levels May Indicate:

• Muscle injury or trauma
• Polymyositis or dermatomyositis
• Muscular dystrophy
• Intense physical exercise
• Certain liver diseases or other conditions affecting muscle tissue

Low Aldolase Levels:
Low levels are generally not considered clinically significant and are rarely associated with disease.
